The interoperability event was conducted simultaneously
in China, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States
PETALUMA, CA., June 10, 2004 - Turin Networks,
a leading developer and supplier of multiservice transport platforms
for telecommunications carriers, today announced the successful
demonstration of the interoperability of its Traverse system
as part of the Optical Internetworking Forum's (OIF) World Interoperability
Demonstration. The event was the industry's first demonstration
of optical networking interoperability conducted among carriers
and vendors internationally. Unlike traditional public interoperability
testing events, which are generally conducted in a third-party
lab, this ongoing demonstration is being conducted simultaneously
by some the world's leading telecommunications carriers, including:
AT&T, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI R&D Laboratories,
Inc., NTT Laboratories, Telecom Italia, and Verizon. A public
showcase of the demonstration, including live network topology
visualizations, will be carried out at SUPERCOMM 2004 from June
22-24, in Chicago at the OIF booth #20334 - Hall A.
Turin's participation in this first of its kind, multi-vendor,
multi-carrier demonstration specifically highlights interoperability
for Ethernet over SONET/SDH services based on the ITU-T standards
for Ethernet service adaptation. The testing included Generic
Framing Procedure (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), and the
Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) to efficiently transport
Gigabit Ethernet and Fast Ethernet services. Turin's Traverse
platform demonstrated interoperability of these features with
multiple other participating vendors, including Ciena, Lucent,
Fujitsu, Sycamore, Cisco, and others, in both intra-carrier
and inter-carrier environments. "This global interoperability
demonstration is a vital step toward carrier deployment of next-generation
services such as Ethernet on a global basis" said John Webley,
president and CEO, Turin Networks. "Turin's Traverse platform
is one of the few MSPP systems implementing a control plane
based on the IETF's (Internet Engineering Task Force's) GMPLS
(Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching) standards, and
supporting any mix of SDH, SONET, Ethernet, and wavelength provisioning
capabilities from the same system."
The Traverse platform will also be showcased at SUPERCOMM in
Turin's booth #24835 - Hall A. "Turin helps industry
thought leaders like telx simplify complex transport networks
and deliver both new and traditional services more efficiently"
said John Webley, president and CEO, Turin Networks. "We are
pleased to partner with telx to improve their ability to offer
new International Gateway and Ethernet Transport services."
About OIF's World Interoperability Demonstration
The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) is sponsoring the industry's
first international joint-carrier, multi-vendor optical networking
interoperability demonstration. The event, conducted simultaneously
in China, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States will highlight
network interoperable solutions among the participating vendors
employing OIF implementation agreements in a multi-carrier environment.
The participating supplier and carrier companies will conduct
interoperability testing of Ethernet over SONET/SDH services
and dynamic optical networking services. Based on ITU-T standards
for Ethernet service adaptation, the Ethernet over SONET/SDH
services testing will include the Generic Framing Procedure
(GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), and the Link Capacity Adjustment
Scheme (LCAS). The dynamic optical networking interoperability
testing will be based on OIF implementation agreements for UNI
1.0 release 2 and E-NNI, and will include testing of both the
control and data plane. These implementation agreements are
based on the ITU's requirements for automatically switched optical
networks. Additional information can be found at http://www.oiforum.com.
