As the First Product in its Class with Hardware Redundancy
and Integrated Ethernet Switching, TraverseEdge™ 100
Allows Carriers to Manage the Convergence of Ethernet and
SONET/SDH in Today's Networks, and to Economically Deploy
Packet and TDM Services
PETALUMA, CA., June 21, 2004 - Turin Networks,
a leading developer and supplier of multiservice transport platforms
for telecommunications carriers, today announced the TraverseEdge™100
(TE-100), a compact next-generation SONET/SDH and Ethernet edge
system designed specifically for carriers. It's the first product
to economically push SONET/SDH to the edge while offering the
redundancy and Ethernet features demanded by carriers.
The TE-100 allows efficient and cost-effective delivery of packet
and TDM services over existing SONET/SDH networks in a variety
of applications. The compact, two rack-unit high design is optimized
for deployments in metro access rings, or as an end-node in
MTUs (multi-tenant units), outside plant environments, or in
customer locations. The TE-100 was designed to work seamlessly
with Turin Networks industry leading metro transport network
solution, the Traverse® Multiservice Transport Platform.
The TE-100 is differentiated from competing platforms by going
beyond supporting standard SONET/SDH facilities protection,
to also provide optional equipment protection for the high-speed
optical network interfaces. Hardware redundancy is a mandatory
feature for many carriers that ensures network availability
in the event of a device failure. "With the introduction
of the TE-100, Turin Networks is once again providing carriers
with the tools they need to manage the convergence of Ethernet
and SONET/SDH at the edge" said John Webley, president and
CEO, Turin Networks. "Carriers have embraced aspects of both
SONET/SDH and Ethernet, and the TE-100 offers the optimal balance
of these technologies in a small form factor that offers carrier
class capabilities for an affordable price."
Turin's TE-100 supports key standards, including GFP (Generic
Framing Procedure), LCAS (Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme) and
both Low-order and High-order Virtual Concatenation (VCAT),
which enable Ethernet traffic to be transported more efficiently
over the SONET/SDH infrastructure. In addition, the TE-100 is
the first product in its class that integrates Ethernet switching
functions to aggregate and manage traffic at layer 2, and deliver
next generation Ethernet services such multi-point VPNs (Virtual
Private Networks) with guaranteed service levels."
"The global shift from TDM-based SONET/SDH ADMs to multi-service
transport platforms is well underway in the network core. And
now Ethernet is driving market dynamics at the network edge,
as service providers focus on improving the cost, efficiency,
and flexibility of providing mixed TDM and data services. Vendors
such as Turin Networks are supporting their customers' evolution
to a purpose-built multi-service edge that extends and integrates
with their large installed SONET/SDH optical networks in the
metro core" said Dana Cooperson, optical networks group and
program director at market research and consulting firm RHK.
"The TE-100 exhibits the carrier-class and multiservice design
characteristics service providers are looking for at the network
edge."
Designed as a next-generation edge solution with global reach,
the TraverseEdge™ 100 aggregates a combination of DS1
or E1, DS3 or E3, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet service
interfaces onto dual high-speed SONET OC-3/12/48 or SDH STM-1/4/16
ports. As a carrier-class product, the TE-100's high-speed optical
ports support linear and ring topologies with optional 1+1 network
protection, and 1:1 equipment protection.
The SONET version of the TE-100 will be available in calendar
Q3 of this year, with the SDH version available in Q4
