Motorola teams with Turin Networks to offer new metropolitan optical transport and service delivery solutions
A new, data-optimized platform for metropolitan optical transport enables broadband network operators to cost-effectively expand their network capacity and deliver new services

New Orleans, LA. May 6, 2002 - Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector has announced a strategic relationship with Turin Networks to provide a new metro optical transport and service delivery solution for broadband network operators. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will market Turin's Traverse® Multiservice Transport Platform as the Motorola Multiservice Broadband Transport 5000 (MBT-5000) to Motorola's broadband network operator customers. The MBT-5000 platform is a data-optimized, multiservice optical transport solution that offers service flexibility and high port density, and provides carrier class reliability and quality of service. In addition, Motorola and Turin plan to collaborate on future marketing and development activities

(May 5-8, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Booth #1623).
The MBT-5000 platform leverages a standards-based, unified architecture that integrates next-generation SONET/SDH technology with powerful Ethernet switching and DWDM capabilities. With this platform, broadband operators can deliver flexible Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet services - as well as traditional voice and private line services - efficiently over the same metro area network infrastructure. In addition, the MBT-5000 offers an innovative "pay as you grow" design concept that addresses operators limited resources for investing in next generation networks by enabling incremental performance and service growth. As demand increases for new broadband services, operators can cost-effectively expand network capacity, and seamlessly adopt evolving technologies such as Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

Integrated within Motorola's industry-leading portfolio of broadband solutions, the MBT-5000 enables cable operators to deploy a high-bandwidth transport infrastructure that supports the delivery of advanced services such as voice telephony, high-speed Internet/data access, and video on demand (VOD).

"The Motorola/Turin metro optical transport solution is an ideal technology offering for our customer base of broadband network operators" said Charles Dougherty, vice president and general manager of Motorola's transmission network systems business. "This platform minimizes the initial capital investment needed for operators to efficiently utilize their network capacity for advanced data services. Then, as capacity requirements increase, they can scale their system accordingly. Motorola is extremely pleased to enter into this strategic relationship."

"Partnering with Motorola Broadband opens up an entirely new market for our multiservice optical transport platform" said John Webley, president and chief executive officer of Turin Networks. "Previously, Turin marketed this platform solely to telecommunications carriers needing an affordable means to evolve and expand their voice networks to offer high bandwidth data services. Now, through this strategic partnership with the world's leading supplier of broadband technology, Turin's metro transport solutions are also available to broadband network operators worldwide."

With more than 50 years of leadership in the design and manufacture of broadband infrastructure equipment, Motorola Broadband offers a complete and diverse family of broadband access solutions for video, voice, and data communications services.
