Comprehensive Study from NSP and Turin Compares the Costs of Alternative Service Provider Ethernet Architectures
Turin's integrated Ethernet and Next-Generation SONET solution shown to deliver considerably lower CAPEX and OPEX than competing alternatives

ATLANTA, GA. June 4, 2002 - Network Strategy Partners, LLC (NSP) and Turin Networks, Inc., today announced the results of an in-depth study that demonstrates the considerable cost-advantages provided by an integrated Ethernet and next-generation SONET solution. The real-world business case models a service provider with the requirement to deliver a mix of traditional SONET/TDM services as well as next generation Ethernet services, and uses this as a basis for comparing the relative costs of various competing network architectures. Turin's integrated Ethernet and next-generation SONET solution is compared with Ethernet and DWDM, traditional SONET and Ethernet, as well as a rival Next-Generation SONET solution.

Most notably, the detailed study finds that even in an Ethernet-centric service mix, Turin's integrated solution - based on the Traverse® Multiservice Optical Transport Platform - delivers up to 30% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than an Ethernet and DWDM solution over a four-year period. In a predominantly SONET/TDM-centric service mix, Turin's solution is found to provide up to 40% lower TCO than a competing next-generation SONET based architecture, and 85% lower TCO than traditional SONET. Key Traverse platform features found to provide these significant cost advantages include the full integration of SONET ADM, DCS and Ethernet switching in a single shelf, scalability from DS1 to OC-192, high interface densities, distributed switching, and the intelligent GMPLS-based control plane.

"Service providers are looking to introduce new revenue-generators such as Ethernet as economically and efficiently as possible, while also lowering the costs associated with delivering traditional services" said Michael Kennedy of Network Strategy Partners. "The flexible and comprehensive nature of this business case makes it a valuable tool for service providers investigating the most viable option for delivering next-generation Ethernet services."

A wide range of service provider capital and operational cost components are included in the financial analysis, and the model permits extensive customization to approximate a specific service provider's network. Among other variables, the size and topology of the network, the service mix, and the growth rate(s) of various different service types (SONET/TDM, Ethernet-based Internet access, Ethernet-based Private Line and Ethernet-based Transparent LAN) can all be modified.

Turin Networks will be showcasing the Business Case tool at SUPERCOMM 2002 (booth #11745 - Hall C). A demonstration of end-to-end provisioning of Gigabit Ethernet services over OC-48 and OC-192 SONET will also be shown with Turin's Traverse Multiservice Optical Transport Platform.
