Intense competition in the telecommunications services industry has placed network operators under significant pressure. To compete effectively, they must to rapidly deliver new and expanded service offerings - such as IPTV, voice over IP (VoIP), Ethernet access, high-speed 3G/4G wireless and other value-added applications - as well as reduce long-term capital expenditures and operating costs while maintaining or increasing service quality. The Metro Service Edge is the segment of the communications infrastructure that connects local enterprise, residential and wireless access networks to long-haul optical networks. Today, many of these networks incorporate a costly portfolio of network elements such as Ethernet switches, MSPPs (Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms), DCS (Digital Cross-connect Systems) and Ethernet over copper as well as pseudowire aggregation platforms. In addition to being expensive to purchase and install, this amalgam of disparate network elements is difficult and costly to maintain and monitor.
